There is a lot of sexual innuendo to go around, and what is said or suggested would have been banned by the Hayes Code, you even get to see topless women in this film, though it is nothing that one can say will excite the eyes, though you wonder how a American audience would react.

It is possible though, that because the film makers were allowed carte blanche on any expense they needed, as it was the most expensive German film at the time, maybe they were given carte blanche on what they wanted to show and to suggest.

If this film is what it is, we ironically perhaps should thank Goobers, as he, perhaps unlike Hitler, realized that people needed entertainment, and maybe not just propaganda.

From what I have read, Hitler said that Kastler would never be allowed to write again, He was not happy from what he saw. Another interesting part of the film I thought, which is relevant today when you hear about the past behaviors of some of our political leaders, is a scene which shows really the stupidity of wanting to be in blackface.

Quite ahead of its time, too bad many of our leaders did not see this film. Like Bond he also seems to enjoy some fine things. Also that he just wants adventure and not to rule is a very interesting one.

Poland is even brought up in the film, and also there is Russia. I will have to look at the actors name, but one guy here who plays I may not have this spelled right Calistrogo, is really interesting, a great presence in this film, and it is too bad we don't see more of him.

Perhaps a future movie can be made with him with this actor in this role in mind. Now some issues, the audio commentary appears quite good, but have not listened to all of it, and would perhaps hope these issues are addressed.

I saw this film for the first time in about , when I had a VCR. Watch some of these scene, the opening especially, here I notice the color is really quite bad, and dull.

But I don't recall seeing it like that in Is this because of the smaller size of my TV back then? I have to admit though saw it again in 86, and only in did I realize some of the scenes, especially of the women I had not noticed.

There is also a lot more history of the restoration of the film on this earlier editor, though no commentary, which mentions some of the finding of prints of this film during this time.

Some being found in Hong Kong. Also why are there even today, two different versions. We apparently from what I have read in the USA, and maybe other countries as well, have the minute version, but I am led to believe that Germany has a minute version, not only that, but with alternate takes.

I will have to hear the commentary a little more. Supposably when this premiered in Germany, it was minutes, but then because of some censorship, reduced down to minutes for the general public.

Though I had also heard that when the bombs started dropping on germany more frequently, many viewers would have to leave to go into the bunkers.

But these are some of the issues I have with the pressing of this film, and wondering if at some time in the future, we will see the final minute version in the USA.

While I can complain about the color in the scenes where the descendent of Munchausen is talking about the past, perhaps with all that was going on at the time, the horrible color does work as a commentary of the time, and the richer ones in the past were intentionally done this way.

One can speculate. But while I wonder why we don't have the minute version, I still highly recommend that one gets this Kino Lobber film.

One person found this helpful. The huge spectacle was based on a popular German fantasy novel about a nobleman whose exploits included riding on a cannonball, fighting a giant crocodile, and traveling to the moon.

The film opens at a ball hosted by a descendent of Baron Munchhausen. Scenes are set in 18th-century Braunschweig, St. Petersburg, Constantinople, Venice, and on the moon.

Director Josef von Baky attempts to keep the pace brisk by dazzling the eye with color, movement, elaborate costumes, special effects, and the fascinating characters that Munchhausen also played by Albers meets during his journey.

Baky makes excellent use of extras and tight framing to give the impression that there are more people than actually appear on screen.

Interspersed with more traditional, intimate dialogue scenes, the spectacular scenes truly are impressive, especially considering when the movie was made.

Special effects are more charming than convincing but add to the magical appeal of the subject matter. Clothing dances out of a wardrobe, a glass fills itself with wine, a horn blows of its own accord, a ring confers invisibility on its wearer, a sword in a duel moves with supersonic speed, exotic vegetation grows on the moon, a disembodied head speaks, a moon creature looks like a clown, and a person who dies turns to smoke.

The look of the film is as impressive as if MGM had a hand in its production design. The Agfacolor, a rival of the American color processes, looks fresh after a long and costly restoration.

The early ballroom scenes have a yellowish hue, but the color really stands out in the Venice and moon sequences. Colors tend to be more pastel than bold.

The film starts slowly before skipping all over the world. The title character, both the modern and ancestral versions, should convey more charm than Albers manages.

His scenes with women strike an uncomfortable note and he comes off as a predator. As with many movies made over 70 years ago, content that seemed humorous or dashing then conveys an entirely different feeling to contemporary viewers.

Unfortunately, as entertainment, the film too often misses the mark. Bonus materials on the unrated Blu-ray release include audio commentary, theatrical trailer, documentary on the production and restoration, animated short by Hans Held, and samples of Agfacolor restoration.

If you can then you will see a remarkable film. I hope any supplements included in the blu ray release will discuss this in depth.
